Construct seems more fitting. I also read the headline and thought it sounded like a mistake.


I read a "social compact" as more of a "social agreement," which gets at the bottom of consensus that he's talking about.

A "social construct" is quite different, that's something entirely constructed by society, like manners or nationalism.


I made the same comment as you in response to parent commenter (now deleted)... But then I looked at some definitions of "social construct" and it seems to have broader semantics than I had thought.
