Oceanbase, yet another open source HTAP database (github.com/oceanbase)

The rise of Chinese developers is highly commendable. The lack of English documentation on the website prevents me from considering the project. I understand that I may not be the target market.

It does mention "english will be coming soon" in the readme

The Ant design docs (from the same group) had the same problem, but over time improved

https://ant.design/docs/react/introduce

Another Chinese database seems to be doing a better job at this front: https://github.com/pingcap/tidb

The license was a new one for me: https://license.coscl.org.cn/MulanPubL-2.0/index.html English at the bottom. Wish there were Python bindings.

> High compatible with MySQL OceanBase Database is compatible with MySQL protocol and syntax. You can access to OceanBase Database by using MySQL client.

Should be possible to use a python client to mysql.

The Mulan license was released by the COSCL (China Open Source Cloud League? I guess? They didn't state that in their About page) to promote open source movement among Chinese companies.

It reads like a Mozilla Public License 2.0 to me at a glance.

Linear scalability is explicit in the readme. Bold statement.

I strong recommend the Database to every companies.

OceanBase is a Distributed Database with more than 11 years history, There are more than 100 companies running with OceanBase.

What's more, It is Alibaba behind OceanBase, OceanBase has been run with all kinds of user cases in Alibaba's Ant Group.

As we all know, OceanBase is the record-holder of TPCC, OceanBase break the TPCC record in 2019 and 2020, http://tpc.org/tpcc/results/tpcc_results5.asp

What's more, OceanBase break the record of 3000GB TPCH in May 20th 2021. http://tpc.org/tpch/results/tpch_perf_results5.asp?resulttyp...

This is an open source release of the database with the highest ever certified TPCC result. Horizontal scalability might be a bold claim but they’ve got some evidence behind it.

tpc.org/tpcc/results/tpcc_perf_results5.asp?resulttype=all

OceanBase was open sourced but they deleted everything says it will no longer be open sourced. Now in 2021 they “open source” it again?

TPCC result means nothing without context, Alibaba spent 54 million USD for hardware building the system to run the tests, in comparison 9 years before Oracle only spent 30 million. Winning a test with almost doubled hardware cost and obviously newer and more powerful hardware, does it really matter?
