I know few but the best effort/research on the subject I know of is VPRI OS written in Ometa (it has a page on wikipedia).
I think they made the whole thing in 100kLoC using dedicated DSLs (compared to Windows which is in the 100M ballpark). I think Alan Kay wanted at 10kLoC system.. who knows maybe one day. :)
